Which US States Have Two Time Zones? The Full List of 14

Last updated October 14, 2026

Quick answer. Fourteen states are split between two time zones: Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas. In every case the two parts are one hour apart, and both parts change their clocks on the same days.

The US time zone lines follow county borders, rivers and old railroad divisions, not state lines. That leaves fourteen states with two clocks. If you call a business in Pensacola, Rapid City or El Paso, the state's main time zone can be an hour off.

The 14 states and where the lines run

The table shows the zone of most of each state, the part that uses the other zone, and what noon in the main part is on the other side. The last column is calculated from the time zone database.

Every split is one hour, and both sides change their clocks on the same Sunday in March and November. So the gap between the two halves of a state never changes during the year.

Why some lists say 13

Nevada is the case that changes the count. Almost all of Nevada is on Pacific time, but the city of West Wendover, on the Utah border, is officially on Mountain time. The US Department of Transportation moved it in 1999 because the city's daily life is tied to Utah and the Salt Lake City area. Lists that only count large areas leave Nevada out and arrive at 13.

A few other towns set their clocks to a neighbor without a federal rule. Jackpot, Nevada keeps Mountain time for its visitors from Idaho. Phenix City and a few other towns in eastern Alabama keep Eastern time because they sit next to Columbus, Georgia. Kenton, in the far west of the Oklahoma panhandle, uses Mountain time by local habit. Officially, Alabama and Oklahoma are each in one zone.

The splits that cause the most mistakes

Smaller splits in the West and the Plains

In Idaho, Boise and the south are on Mountain time, and the northern panhandle, around Coeur d'Alene and Lewiston, is on Pacific time with Spokane. In Oregon, most of Malheur County, including Ontario, is on Mountain time with Boise. In the Dakotas and Nebraska the line runs from north to south, and the western parts, including Rapid City and Scottsbluff, are on Mountain time. Kansas has only four Mountain time counties, on the Colorado line. In Michigan, four counties of the Upper Peninsula that border Wisconsin are on Central time. Alaska is the outlier: most of the state is on Alaska time, and the far western Aleutian Islands use Hawaii–Aleutian time.

Arizona is a different case

Arizona is often listed with these states, but it is entirely in the Mountain time zone. What differs is daylight saving time. Most of Arizona stays on UTC−7 all year, so in summer it shows the same time as Los Angeles. The Navajo Nation in the northeast does change its clocks, and the Hopi Reservation inside it does not. Between March and November, a drive across northeastern Arizona can change the clock several times. See Phoenix for the current offset.

How to avoid mistakes

The US time zones guide covers the six main zones and the territories. To compare a split-state city with your own, use the Meeting Planner with Chicago for Central, Denver for Mountain or New York for Eastern.

Frequently asked questions

How many US states have two time zones?

Fourteen: Alaska, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas. Some lists say 13 because they leave out Nevada, where only the small city of West Wendover is on Mountain time.

Is any US state in three time zones?

No state is officially in three. Arizona is sometimes described that way, but Arizona is all in the Mountain time zone. The difference is daylight saving time: most of Arizona skips it, while the Navajo Nation uses it.

What time zone is the Florida panhandle in?

The part of the panhandle west of the Apalachicola River, including Pensacola and Panama City, is on Central time. Tallahassee and the rest of Florida are on Eastern time, one hour ahead.

Which part of Texas is on Mountain time?

El Paso and Hudspeth counties in the far west. The rest of Texas, including Houston, Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, is on Central time, one hour ahead of El Paso.
